More Than a Thank You: A Grateful Heart Gives

More Than a Thank You: A Grateful Heart Gives
November Spotlight | Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church
Estimated reading time: 4 minutes
Before the holiday plans, the shopping lists, and the question of who’s bringing the macaroni and cheese, November invites us to pause: What have we received—and how will we respond?
It’s easy to focus on what is missing. The prayer we’re still waiting on. The opportunity that hasn’t opened. The life we thought would look different by now. Those concerns are real. Being thankful doesn’t require us to pretend otherwise. It invites us to recognize God’s faithfulness while we’re still waiting.
We have received grace we could never earn, mercy we need every morning, and love that does not depend on having everything together. Gratitude begins when we pay attention to those gifts. It grows when we allow them to shape how we live.
Two moments in Scripture show us how receiving God’s goodness can lead to gratitude, generosity, and sacrifice.

A Little Lunch, a Willing Heart
Read John 6:1–13
A large crowd had gathered around Jesus, and the people needed food. A boy was there with five barley loaves and two fish. Compared with the thousands of people waiting to eat, that lunch seemed small.
But Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and distributed it. Everyone ate as much as they wanted, and the disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers.
Before the crowd saw abundance, Jesus gave thanks for what was already there.
That is a lesson every generation can practice. We can spend so much time thinking about what we wish we had that we overlook what is already in our hands. Food to eat. Someone who cares. Something we can share. An opportunity to help.
The miracle belonged to Jesus. Our invitation is to recognize what we have and willingly place it in His service.
For a child, that might mean sharing crayons or helping choose socks to donate. For an adult, it might mean sharing resources, offering transportation, or making time for a neighbor.
What is already in your hands that could become a blessing to someone else?

A Towel, a Savior, and a Love That Gives
Read John 13:1–17
At a meal with His disciples, Jesus got up, wrapped a towel around His waist, and began washing their feet.
Their feet would have been dirty from walking dusty roads. Washing them was a humble task, yet Jesus—their Lord and Teacher—chose to do it Himself. Then He told them to follow His example.
Love was something they could see and feel: water, a towel, and their Savior kneeling to serve.
Children can understand that kind of love. It looks like helping clean up, making room for someone, or noticing when another person needs care. Adults need that reminder, too. Serving may require our time, our comfort, or a change in our plans.
Jesus’ love would lead Him even further. He would give His life for us. God’s generosity became personal in Jesus: He came near, served, and gave Himself for our salvation.
We respond to that love through grateful, willing service. We cannot do everything, but each of us can do something.
Who could experience God’s love through something you do this month?

Our November Response: Remember, Give, and Go
At Orchard Knob, we have opportunities to put grateful hearts into action.
Celebrate 139 years of God’s faithfulness on Sunday, November 8. Our church anniversary invites us to remember the generations whose prayers, service, and sacrifices helped sustain this congregation. As we thank God for their faithfulness, we can also ask what we are building for those coming behind us.
Connect with our neighbors at Bayberry Apartments. The Evangelism Ministry has fellowship and Bible study outreach projects planned for November 21, November 28, and December 19. These gatherings create space to build relationships, share Scripture, and grow together in faith. Giving our presence and attention can be a meaningful act of love.
Share fellowship through the Deaconess Ministry. A visit, a conversation, or a meal together can remind someone they are loved and remembered. The Deaconess Ministry has four opportunities to share that kind of care in November and December.
The Deaconess Ministry also thanks everyone who donated wigs, hats, and scarves to encourage people receiving cancer care at Erlanger, Parkridge, and Memorial hospitals. Your generosity is one way our church family has already put gratitude into action.
Help the Bridge Ministry share warmth. The Bridge Cares Drive is accepting socks and blankets through November 29 for neighbors experiencing homelessness. Drop off your donation in the collection box in the registration area, or click the link in the bulletin for more information.
This November, take time to notice what you have. Thank God for it. Tell people you appreciate them. Then consider what you can share.
Let your thankfulness become something someone else can experience.
