BUILT DIFFERENT: Back to School with Faith, Purpose & Courage

A new school year means new classes, new people, new opportunities—and pressure to fit in.

But you weren’t created just to blend in.

God has given you gifts, abilities, ideas, personality, influence, and purpose. You don’t have to wait until you’re older to use them. The Bible is filled with young people God called and used right where they were.

This school year, remember three things:

Put God first. Never count yourself out. Have the courage to stand.

Samuel — 1 Samuel 3:1–10

Samuel was still a boy when God called his name. He was young and still learning how to recognize God’s voice, but when God called, Samuel answered:
That’s where your year starts too.

Before you worry about what everybody else thinks, ask what God thinks. Before you let social media tell you who you’re supposed to be, learn what God says about you. Before you follow somebody else’s direction, make sure you know where God is leading you.

Pray about the test. Pray about your friendships. Pray when you’re frustrated. Pray before you react.

Then listen.

Because putting God first isn’t just talking to God. It’s being willing to let Him lead.

Start with God, and you’ll know whose voice matters most when everybody else starts talking.

The Boy with Five Loaves and Two Fish — John 6:1–14

Thousands of people were hungry, and the disciples couldn’t see how they could possibly feed them all.

Then Andrew noticed a boy with five loaves and two fish.

Compared to the size of the problem, it didn’t look like enough.

But Jesus took what was already available and multiplied it.

HIS “NOT ENOUGH” BECAME MORE THAN ENOUGH.

What if Jesus took what’s already available in you—your ideas, creativity, intelligence, kindness, voice, gifts, and even the abilities you’re still discovering—and developed them into something you can’t see yet?

Maybe somebody gets better grades. Maybe they’re more athletic, popular, confident, or their gifts get noticed before yours.

Don’t count yourself out.

Comparison will have you overlooking what’s already in your own hands.

The boy didn’t have what everyone thought was needed. He had what he had—and that was enough to put into Jesus’ hands.

So don’t spend this year comparing your five loaves and two fish to what somebody else brought.

Bring yours.

Work with it. Develop it. Learn. Practice. Grow. Then put it in God’s hands.

Don’t underestimate what God can do through you.

Daniel — Daniel 1:3–20

Daniel was likely a teenager when he was taken to Babylon. Everything around him changed—the people, culture, expectations, and even what others wanted him to become.

But Daniel decided there were some things he wasn’t willing to change.Daniel decided who he was going to be before the crowd decided for him.

That’s leadership.

STAND UP. When someone is being bullied, don’t become another person laughing. Speak up. Help. Be willing to stand for someone.

STAND APART. Everybody doesn’t have to understand your choices. You don’t have to lower your standards just to fit in.

STAND FIRM. When the pressure comes, remember who you are and Who you belong to.
Standing firm doesn’t mean being rude or acting better than anyone else. Sometimes courage is simply saying:

“That’s not for me.”

And keep moving.

GOD FIRST.
Pray. Listen. Let God guide your decisions.

NEVER COUNT YOURSELF OUT.
Don’t measure what God can do by what you currently have. Your “not enough” can become more than enough in His hands.

STAND UP. STAND APART. STAND FIRM.
Do what’s right—even when doing what’s right makes you different.

Now live it.
Walk into this school year ready to learn, work, grow, and lead. Keep God first, develop what He’s already placed in you, and don’t shrink yourself to fit into the crowd. You don’t have to have everything figured out today—you just have to keep showing up, keep growing, and have the courage to become who God is calling you to be.

Lord, as I begin this school year, help me put You first. Teach me to pray, listen, and follow Your direction. When I feel like I’m not enough, remind me that You can use what I already have and develop what is still growing in me.

Give me courage to do what’s right, even when it makes me different. Help me stand up for others, stand apart when necessary, and stand firm in what I know is right. Help me work hard, grow my gifts, make wise choices, and use my influence for good.

This year, help me not just follow the crowd, but become the person and leader You are calling me to be.
